A Call for Gender Equity & Equality on Women's Equality Day
This week, we feature Naiyya Saggi, the group co-founder TheGoodGlamm Group. She has an MBA from Harvard Business School and has worked with McKinsey & Company and Bridgespan Group before starting her own venture.
Naiyya Saggi is passionate about empowering women and creating a more equitable and inclusive society. In her latest post on LinkedIn, she shares some startling data from OECD on the gender gap in household chores in India and how it impacts women’s opportunities and outcomes in the workforce. She also urges us to have more conversations and collaborations on this issue and to support each other as allies.
She shares her key points from this post in her own words:
🕒 Indian women spend 15 times more time on household chores than Indian men do. That is 298 minutes daily on average vs 19 minutes by men daily on average.
🌎 Indian women spend the maximum time on chores globally. This means that Indian women have less time and energy to pursue their careers, education, hobbies, or personal growth.
🚧 This also means that Indian women face more barriers and challenges to enter, stay, and thrive in the workforce. To achieve more equity and equality at work, we need to start with gender equity at home.💥 We need to challenge the social norms and expectations that assign domestic work as women’s responsibility. We need to share the burden of household chores equally among men and women.
💬 We need to have more dialogue and awareness on this issue among our families, friends, colleagues, and communities. We need to support each other as allies and partners in creating a more balanced and fair society.
Have you ever faced or witnessed the gender gap in household chores? How do you think we can bridge it? Share your thoughts with us.
🔑 Key Learning
Indian women are currently spending 15 times more time on household chores than men, hindering their career and personal growth. Hence there is an urgent need to emphasise gender equity at home.
